A birthright is defined as any right or privilege to which a person is entitled by birth. In some cultures, this includes such things as the rights of democracy, the right to inherited land or the right to certain privileges, such as a royal family might enjoy. Not every father is capable of bestowing land and riches to their eldest son, but at the very least our birthright includes that shared awareness and pride in community. For this reason, In most cultures, it is customary to teach the traditions of the community and guide the children towards fulfilling the family legacy. Unfortunately, many children of Africa never had this privilege. They were taken away and discommunicated from their homelands and consequently, never realized the rights that they were entitled to by birth - their birthright.

Imagine growing up only knowing one of your parents but being led to believe that your other parent was poor, dumb , uncivilized and dirty ... that your other parent had nothing to offer you and probably never loved you. Hopefully, that is not the reality for your family but in a larger sense, it is the reality for all of us who bear the name "African American". Most of us do not know the continent from which our ancestors came. What's more, we have never heard anything good about it.

It's time to change that.

Get to know a continent with over 50 different countries, with different religions, different languages, different economies. Some rich, some poor, some that have never been touched by the 'slave' trade and others that were very likely the home of our ancestors. Some strikingly beautiful with landscapes, architecture and natural wonders that rival any in the world… some ravaged from years of colonization by France and Britain, among others.

A continent with over 135 UNESCO world heritage sites, including amazing beaches, majestic mountains, beautiful urban areas, fully developed with skyscrapers and gorgeous architecture. Cities filled with people from all walks of life... from humble farmers and amazing artists and merchants to billionaires.

It's time to dispel the lies. Get to know the real Africa. Discover the land of your ancestors for yourself.
